RFID Tags and Readers Explained

Tags carry identifiers; readers capture them. Selecting compatible hardware requires attention to frequency, materials, read-zone design and the way people will use the system.

What an RFID Tag Contains

Chip and Antenna

The chip stores an identifier and controls communication. The tag antenna receives and transmits radio-frequency energy.

Inlay and Substrate

The chip and antenna form an inlay that is mounted on a substrate or converted into a label, hangtag, hard tag or embedded form.

Passive Tags

Passive tags have no battery for radio operation. They obtain energy from the reader field and respond when interrogated.

Active Tags

Active tags use their own power source—usually a battery—and contain a transmitter. They differ in cost, size and maintenance from passive tags.

Frequency families

LF, HF/NFC and UHF Serve Different Needs

RFID is a family of technologies rather than one universal system. Tags and readers must use compatible frequencies and protocols. Radio behaviour, typical read distance and common applications differ by frequency.

  • LFLow-frequency RFID is commonly associated with short-range identification such as access control and animal identification.
  • HF and NFCHigh-frequency RFID includes NFC and is commonly used for cards, ticketing, payment and close-range data exchange.
  • UHF / RAINPassive UHF RFID is widely used for inventory and asset identification where multiple-tag and longer-range capture may be useful.

Readers Connect Tags to Software

Fixed Readers

Installed at defined locations for repeatable capture. Many fixed readers use separate reader antennas positioned to shape the required read zone.

Handheld Readers

Combine a mobile computer or paired device with RFID capture for counting, search, verification and exception handling.

Integrated Readers and Gateways

Package reader electronics and antenna functions into a single device for doorways, ceilings, cabinets or other designed locations.

Reader-to-Software Connection

Readers forward tag observations through wired or wireless networks. Software filters the reads and applies business context.

Define where capture must occur, the number of nearby tags and whether items are stationary or moving.

Consider material, surface shape, size, attachment, durability, temperature and moisture before selecting a tag.

Frequency and Memory

Confirm regional frequency compatibility and whether the application needs only an identifier or additional encoded memory.

Mobility and Connectivity

Choose fixed, handheld or integrated readers based on installation, operator mobility, network and power availability.
